inserting the menstrual cup correctly

How to insert a menstrual cup easily?

Inserting your menstrual cup is an essential step that raises many questions: How to handle it? How to position it correctly? How to be sure that it is positioned at the right height? How can you be sure that it is correctly deployed and that you will not leak?

These are legitimate questions and what is certain is that a little time of adaptation and training is necessary. But with our advice, everything should go smoothly.

If you have already used another brand of menstrual cup.

Those who have a long history with traditional menstrual cups and are switching to La Cup Luneale think that they will be able to do without the adaptation period, because between 2 traditional cups with stems, the functioning is often quite similar.

But the Luneale Cup works differently from other cups.

For example, it can be flattened according to the anatomy while remaining watertight. This is confusing, when you know that traditional menstrual cups have to be fully deployed to be watertight (sometimes pressing too hard on the vaginal walls...). So we often have questions about the partial deployment of the Luneale Cup.

The answer is simple: if it turns on itself, even if it is flattened, everything is OK. It is the cup's job to adapt to your anatomy, not the other way around.

So if you are a long-time cook, it may be even more difficult for you than for a beginner, because you will have to unlearn and relearn.

But again, it's worth it, as many women who have switched to the Cup Luneale from other brands tell us that they have gained in comfort and have less leakage!

If you are new to the menstrual cup.

In general, it takes between 1 and 3 cycles of adaptation to handle a menstrual cup without worry. This is normal, but it is important to know and persevere. After this learning period, more than 9 out of 10 women give up disposable menstrual protection for good. So it's worth it, right?

Try your menstrual cup outside of your period.

Unlike tampons, the menstrual cup does not dry out the mucous membranes: it is therefore possible to try it out outside of your period.

This allows you to become familiar with the different folds and to find the one that suits you in a more serene context than on the first day of your period. This way, when your period arrives, you will already know the basic manipulations that suit your anatomy.

A useful note: outside of menstruation, the vagina may be less lubricated than during, which can make the test less easy. The solution is either to moisten the cup with water or to put a little water-based intimate lubricant or organic coconut oil on the outside.

Double the cup with external protection.

Since the main fear is leakage and you are not yet sure that your cup will fit properly, we advise you to wear a pad, panty liner or menstrual panties for the first few cycles to reassure yourself.

This way you will soon realise that there is no problem.

Make yourself comfortable.

The ideal position for inserting the menstrual cup is with a round back and pelvis forward. This position is easily achieved on the toilet, in the shower/bathtub with your foot on the edge or squatting. Take time to find the position that suits you.

Fold and insert your cup.

We recommend 2 proven methods, but you can also combine them or invent your own. It may sound technical when you read it, but in a few moments you will be able to set up your cup in less than 5 seconds.

Method 1: Insertion in 2 steps

1/ Fold your cup into a C shape

2 / Insert only the top of the menstrual cup and release the fold: the cup will start to unfold.

3 /Screw the cup towards the bottom of the vagina using the MoonPad (it is a bit more complicated with a menstrual cup with a rod). This rotation movement ensures that the ring is well deployed, so that the cup will be watertight. If you feel that the cup is not rotating, you can push it with your perineum, as if you wanted to inflate it.

Method 2: Classic insertion

1/ Fold your cup into a punchdown

2 / Insert the entire cup

3 /Screw the cup in place with the MoonPad. This rotation movement ensures that the ring is well deployed, so that the cup will be watertight. If you feel that the cup is not rotating, you can push it in a little with your perineum, as if you wanted to inflate it.
